Prices are the contractor’s. What a repipe turns on, and why no service life for any pipe appears here.

The summary

A repipe is priced on access and making good rather than on pipe. The route, the number of fixtures, how many walls and ceilings are opened and who restores them decide almost all of it. The material itself is a small part of the number.

No number appears here

PipeRenew routes calls to independent contractors who set their own prices. Any figure we printed would be invented, and on a job whose scope runs from one accessible branch to every pipe in a two-story house, an invented range would mislead more than it helped.

What actually moves it

Access, first and by a distance. Whether there is an attic or a crawl space to run through, how many openings are needed, and who closes and finishes them.

Then the size of the system: how many fixtures, how many floors, how far the runs are. Then the material going in. Then whether anything has to be brought up to current requirements as part of permitted work.

The questions that change the number most

Is making good included, and to what standard — patched, closed, finished, painted? Is this the whole system or part of it, and if part, which part and what improvement is expected? Is the permit and inspection in the figure?

Three questions, and between them they account for most of the variation between two quotes on the same house.

And the figure that is not in any quote

What the alternative costs. A house producing repeat failures is producing repeat call-outs and repeat damage, and that runs whether or not anybody adds it up.
