A partial repipe is a real option with specific consequences: two materials on one system, a transition fitting at every join, and the untouched half still aging. It makes sense where one run is clearly the problem, and it wants settling in writing.

When it makes sense

When one part of the house is being opened anyway. When one branch has produced all the failures and the rest has produced none. When a section is accessible and the remainder is buried in finished work. When a budget is real and the alternative is doing nothing.

None of those is a compromise for its own sake. They are reasons.

The junctions are the thing to settle

Wherever new work meets old, there is a transition, and transitions between materials need the right fittings — particularly where a metal meets a different metal.

Ask where the junctions will be, what fittings are used, and whether they will be accessible afterwards. A transition buried inside a finished wall is a decision being made on your behalf.

What the remaining old pipe still does

If the reason for repiping was restricted bore, then whatever is left restricted still restricts. Replacing the branch to one bathroom does not improve flow if the trunk feeding it is the problem.

So ask what improvement is actually expected from the part being done, in plain terms, before agreeing to it.

And keep a record of what was done

Write down or photograph what was replaced, when, in what material, and where the junctions are. The next person to work on the house — possibly you in ten years — will otherwise be guessing.
