The pipe itself is a minor line item and the plumbing is quick. What takes the time and the money is getting to where the pipe has to go and putting the building back afterwards.
The summary
Most of the cost and nearly all of the disruption in a repipe is the building rather than the plumbing. The route decides it: through walls, through ceilings, through the attic, or under the floor. Ask what gets opened and who makes it good afterwards.
The routes, and what they cost in wall
Through an attic, dropping down inside walls to each fixture: fewer openings, usually the least invasive on a single-story house with an accessible roof space. Through a crawl space or basement, coming up: the same logic from below. Through the walls themselves, horizontally: the most openings and the most making good.
Which is available depends on the building rather than on preference, and it is the first thing worth asking about.
Who makes good, and to what standard
Some contractors patch openings, some close them properly, some close and finish, and some do not touch them at all. All four are legitimate business models and they are not the same quote.
Ask explicitly: who closes the openings, who finishes them, who paints, and is any of that in the figure I have been given. This is the single largest source of unpleasant surprises on this kind of job.
Water off, and for how long
A whole-house repipe means the supply is off for meaningful stretches, often across several days with the house reconnected overnight. Establish the pattern in advance if anybody in the household needs it otherwise.
Permits, inspection and credentials
Replacing a water distribution system is a permitted alteration nearly everywhere, and the work is normally inspected before the openings are closed up. That sequencing matters: closing walls before an inspection can mean opening them again.
Contractors are required to hold whatever credential their state or municipality demands. Ask to see the permit rather than assuming there is one. We do not vouch for any individual contractor and no page here says we do.
